FAQs
Answers to some of the questions that people often ask me.
- "What have you written recently?"
See What's New. - "Are your stories available in a collection?"
Yes, a short story collection, "Impact Parameter (and other quantum realities)" is available from Golden Gryphon Press . And many of my stories can be found in anthologies available from your local bookseller, or from Amazon - "In Mars Crossing, you quote lyrics from a song, "Abbas abd'el Sami." Is this song available anywhere?
The lyrics are here: Abbas abd'el Sami. If you want the music, you'll have to write it yourself. - "In Mars Crossing, you show an expedition making rocket fuel on Mars. Is this real technology, or only science fiction?"
It's real technology. Look at information and links about making rocket propellant on Mars. - "Do you have another novel coming out?"
Recently I've written some short stories (see the "what's next" section in What's New. ) - "Are you working on another novel?"
I have a contract to write two novels, which will come out from Tor Books. No release date for these, though. - "Is one of these a sequel to Mars Crossing ?"
The second one will have a section that takes place on Mars, although it's not a sequel. I'm eagerly waiting (and working on!) results of the upcoming missions to Mars
Science Stuff
- You can find links to projects I've worked on here and there on the net.
- I am a member of the science team of the Mars Exploration Rovers mission, two highly-capable rovers named "Spirit" and "Opportunity" that are currently roving across the surface of Mars.
- Zip Code Mars
- Martian soil article
- I also participated in a 2003 field test of the "FIDO" rover. See me on sol 19 of operations.
- Mars Pathfinder is one of the projects I worked on.
- You can read an account of why Mars is such a fascinating planet, and what I did on the Pathfinder mission, on the page "Return to the Red Planet " on the NASA server
- find a pdf file of a talk I gave about my experiences with Pathfinder at the Workshop on Space Mechanisms. Or read some short e-mail clips I sent during Pathfinder operations.
- You can see a picture of the little experiment that I designed, a discussion of Solar Energy on Mars, or more discussions on the NASA Glenn Pathfinder page, or see results of my experiment.

Here's my experiment (visible at the lower right corner of the Sojourner's solar panel) on Mars!
- I worked on MIP, a project to demonstrate making oxygen for rocket fuel on the surface of Mars.
- I also work on the design of airplanes to fly in the atmosphere of Mars and Venus (see pdf files here ).
- I was principle investigator on a solar cell testbed project.
- An especially fun project was working with a bunch of physicists and physicist/SF-writers at a NASA workshop on Faster than Light Travel. One result of this was that we determined that cosmic wormholes could have net negative mass. This paper was so interesting that the University of California put out a press release about it! I was featured in Discover magazine article about faster than light travel; the article is available from Findarticles.com, and you can also read my comments about the article.
- Another project I spent a lot of time working on is developing was laser power beaming to power spacecraft. You can read a brief overview.
- If you really want more details, you are welcome to see my complete scientific bibliography.
