20 Year Usenet Timeline

Google has fully integrated the past 20 years of Usenet archives into Google Groups, which now offers access to more than 800 million messages dating back to 1981. This is by far the most complete collection of Usenet articles ever assembled and a fascinating first-hand historical account.

We compiled some especially memorable articles and threads in the timeline below. For example, read Tim Berners-Lee's announcement of what became the World Wide Web or Linus Torvalds' post about his "pet project". You can find more in-depth information about the archive here.

Google Metaverse由天才女工程师王忻打造？

　　Google Metaverse是外界对于Google传闻中的虚拟世界服务的称呼，它就类似于Second Life，详情见G速客先前的文章。之前的消息称Google正和中国一家企业合作开发Google Metaverse的虚拟人物，而虚拟世界本身则由Google内部的团队负责设计。那么到底是哪个团队呢？

　　Philipp引述 Reto Meier的猜测，正在背后打造Google Metaverse核心的Google团队可能就是Google的天才女工程师王忻（Niniane Wang）所带领的。

　　王忻在去年5月份曾经在自己的blog里兴奋地说（译）：在今天的会议上我意识到，如果说我们正在从事Google最好的项目并且我们正在这个星球上最好的企业工作，那么我们就是在从事世界上最好的项目。正如之前的采访里所说的那样，王忻目前正在带领Google团队秘密从事于Google的一个顶级项目。那么这个被王忻称为"世界上最好的项目"是否就是 Google Metaverse呢？

　　Reto Meier认为王忻的背景和专长很符合Google Metaverse的开发需要。王忻在Windows环境下的编程功力深厚，专长于真实世界模拟器。她目前在Google从事的项目里括一个C++客户端和一个Java服务端（类似于Google Earth）。在加入Google之前，王忻是微软的飞行模拟器团队的主管，并且向美国计算机协会计算机绘图专业组提交过虚拟世界创新方面的论文，比如动态天气生成。而在Google，王忻之前已经由于在Google Desktop项目上的出色表现而获得了Founder's Award。因此如果说Google正在打造虚拟世界服务，那么王忻就是最好的人选。

　　Reto Meier的这种猜测看起来比较令人信服，但到底王忻正在从事的秘密项目是不是Google Metaverse，我们还得等待进一步的消息。但我的感觉是这个服务至少得过一年半载才会浮出水面。

Google AdSense推介广告将有重大改革——最高收入可达255美元/个

　　如果你是Google AdSense用户，并且一直以来都在网站上投放AdSense推介广告，那么你最近很可能会在AdSense的收入结果里看到AdSense推介广告为你带来5美元或10美元等新收入。一直以来，AdSense推介广告的规定都是当一个新用户点击了你的AdSense推介广告后注册了AdSense帐号，然后他也开始投放AdSense广告，当他在180天内赚到了100美元广告费，你就可以得到100美元奖励。这是Google用来激励用户推广 AdSense网络的一种方法。但到底为什么最近又会出现5美元、10美元这种AdSense推介广告收入呢？

　　著名网络广告专家Jennifer Slegg得到了一些内部消息，则Google将很快就会正式推出新的AdSense推介广告规则，而新的规则将使得AdSense用户可以从自己所推荐的每位新用户身上获得最高达255美元的奖励。这比之前的100美元要高了许多。

　　简单而言，新的规定是：在180天内，所推荐的用户如果赚到了5美元，那么你也会得到5美元；如果所推荐的用户赚够了100美元，那么你可以得到 250美元。换言之，在180天里，你每推荐一个用户最高可获得255美元的奖励。如此一来，即使你所推荐的用户在180天内没有赚够100美元，你也可以至少获得5美元的奖励，而不会一无所获，白费功夫。这种新规定无疑会进一步激发现有的AdSense用户推广AdSense网络的热情，相比而言也比较公平一些。

　　这种新规定不但对将来的推介有效，而且很可能还会对之前180天里所产生的转换也有效，Google会自动把之前的旧转换按新规定给予用户相应的奖励。

　　Jennifer Slegg还透露Google将很快就会正式宣布这项新规定。根据以往的经验，Jennifer Slegg所得到的消息一般是非常可靠的，因为她经常直接与Google AdSense、YPN等广告网络团队成员进行直接的接触和交流。接下来我们只需等待一下便可知结果如何。

关于AdSense推介：

除了以上的变动外，还有一条，那就是在任何一个180天的时期里，你推荐了25位新用户，他们各自都赚到了多于100美元的合法收入，那么你将得到2000美元的奖励。

关于AdWords推介：

当你推介的广告商在注册后的90天内在AdWords里额外花费了5美元，那么你将得到5美元的奖励；如果这个广告商在90天内花费了100美元，那么你将得到40美元的奖励；在180天的有效时期里，如果你所推荐的20位新广告商均各自于90天内在AdWords里花费了超过100美元的广告费，你将得到600美元的奖励。

　　正如我在过去一直在强调的那样， Google的网站管理员工具（webmaster tools）是管理网站的有效工具，特别是对于比较大型或注重在Google上面的排名的网站。Google网站管理员工具可以说是Google与站长之间进行直接交流的最好手段，站长可以通过使用这个工具，让Google明白怎样才能更好地理解和抓取网站的内容，而Google则会根据站长的使用反馈，不断地改进这个工具。比如，Google网站管理员工具上一次大更新中就包括对于收录网站图片的重大改进。

　　今天Google网站管理员工具blog 宣布，已经给这个工具加上了一项很实用的功能，即允许站长直接查看网站详尽而全面的内部及外部链接。打个比方，对于xxx.com而言，内部链接指的是来自 xxx.com网页自身的链接，而外部链接则是指来自xxx.com以外网页的链接。Google一直以来都有提供一个简单的操作符，即"link:网址"，来列出指定网址的外链。但这次Google管理员工具所提供的同类功能却强大得多，它所列出的内外部链接都比"link:网址"要详尽并且全面。

　　只要你的网站通过了Google网站管理员工具的验证，你即可以看到"链接"标签里已经列出了网站的详细的内外链接：

　　点击右边的链接数量，即可列出详尽的链接网页。

　　一般来讲，足够的内部链接可以使得读者及搜索引擎能更全面地阅读和理解你的网站的完整内容，而足够的外部链接则可以让你的网站得到更多来自其它网站的权重，有利于排名及PR值的提升。当然，这些链接必须是良性链接。利用Google网站管理员工具可以帮助你更好地关注这些链接的变化。
